The Elven Maid
Once there was an elven maid
Whose many suitors were dismayed,
For she was cool and coy and staid,
And who might win the elven maid?
There came a lord of high renown,
With hawk and hound and velvet gown,
On bended knee his suit he prayed:
He could not win the elven maid.
Then came a wizard of great power,
The master of a magic tower,
But by his spells she was not swayed:
He could not win the elven maid.
And came a bard, so debonair,
His garb was rich, his speech was fair,
He sweetly sang and deftly played,
But he could not win the elven maid.
Then came an elf archer, bold and true,
With hair of gold and eyes bright blue;
A red red rose at her feet he laid
To speak his love for the elven maid.
And so my simple song is done,
For thus the elven maid was won,
And now through wood and glade they ride:
The elven archer and his bride.
